Notes
This drawing is a preparatory study for the 1517 altar Saint Paul in Pulpit, before in the chapel of Saint Paul in the Mercanzia courthouse, the corporate headquarters in Sienna, and now in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. The painting differs in many ways from this drawing [Opera completa del Beccafumi, Rizzoli Editore, Milano, no. 17]. […]The only known study for this high altar was executed after this drawing since the Virgin and Child appear surrounded by angels. (P. Barocchi, Domenico Beccafumi e il suo Tempo, Milan, 1990, no. 90, ill.).
