Giulio Clovio, mostly famous as a miniaturist, made many drawings in black chalk known thanks to an inventory drawn up in 1577, shortly before his death. These drawings often carry an annotation after Michel Ange, thus testifying to the deep esteem the artist had for this great master.
The Christ Carried to the Tomb can be related to a drawing of similar composition, now in the Drawings Department at the Louvre Museum, Paris, Acc. no. 2716. P. In a 1992 publication, P. Costamagna states that this drawing could likely be a preparatory study for a lost work, and suggests that, besides Michel Ange’s influence, the landscape was inspired by Dürer.
