Notes

De Gheyn’s fascination with the supernatural is suggested by the survival of over twenty drawings of scenes of sorcery and witchcraft, I. Q. van Regteren Altena, Jacques de Gheyn, Three Generations, The Hague, 1983, nos. 510-31. Of these, two are set in barrel vaulted structures similar to that in the present drawing: the Witches Scene of 1603 at Rennes and the Witches under an arched Vault of 1604 in the Ashmolean, op. cit., nos. 521 and 523. The present sheet would appear to be the near contemporary of the former, which is of similar dimensions.
