Notes
This drawing is a preparatory study for one of the Virgins’ head in The Glory of Saint Ursula painted in 1491 by Carpaccio for the Scuola di Saint’Orsola, now preserved at the Gallery dell’Accademia in Venice. Two other female heads should be related to this painting (M. Muraro, I Disegni di Vittore Carpaccio, Florence, 1977, figs. 48-49). Another drawing by Carpaccio, Arm and Head Study (Uffizi, Acc. no. 1470E), has been annotated in the same way by Marco Boschini, a seventeenth-century writer and connoisseur of Venetian painting (Muraro, p. 41, fig. 27).
